Our Programmes

"I had long been a representative voice for my people, but I never quite had the tools or the knowledge of how we might go about making the change. With all this in mind, I was inspired to start the [BA in Sustainable Development] programme…"

JWL offers and continuously develops a stackable learning learning path of accredited/certified programmes ranging from English language through to degree level. Programmes are contextually relevant and cover key and in-demand fields including education, peace, economics, and sustainable development.
JWL provides marginalised youth the world over with access to a range of programmes in diverse, in-demand fields and levels, certified/accredited by universities from across the globe. Due to this international scope, JWL classifies its programmes in accordance with the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED) – a comprehensive framework for organising education programmes and qualifications by levels and fields, maintained by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

ISCED level 4 programmes build on secondary education and prepare individuals to enter the labour market or pursue tertiary education. The level of knowledge, skills and competencies acquired is lower than in tertiary education.
JWL programmes offered under ISCED level 4:
Global English Language
Mathematics
These programmes prepare students for employment and/or tertiary studies by developing communications skills in a language that is frequently a pre-requisite, along with numeracy, problem-solving and logical reasoning skills.
The GEL programme serves as a stepping stone for learners to access JWL professional and academic programmes, to increase chances of success at a local university, as well as greater professional opportunities.
Programme delivery
The GEL programme brings a comprehensive, hiqh-quality approach to language learning. It uses the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), so that any learning centre anywhere in the world can compare their students’ proficiency accurately against others:
A1 – Starter
A2 – Elementary
B1 – Pre-Intermediate
B1+ - Intermediate
B2 – Upper Intermediate
C1 – Advanced
A local facilitator teaches the GEL programme. Each level requires 120 hours of teaching and 120 hours of independent study. Students typically take three levels per year and it takes two years to complete all six levels.

Curriculum
JWL provides digital access to the Cambridge English Unlimited course at all 6 levels, from Starter to Advanced. Students who wish to follow an academic pathway can transfer to the Cambridge Unlock course from intermediate level. Students can access the learning resources on JWL HeLP (Humanitarian eLearning Platform) using a computer, tablet or smartphone, so that they can learn English anytime and anywhere.
Extracurricular Opportunities
Although GEL classes take place in a local community learning centre, there are opportunities for students to communicate with peers across the globe, to practise their English and interact with young people from different countries and cultures:
GEL Connect Initiative – GEL students are paired individually with a native English student for remote weekly speaking sessions, providing an opportunity to develop their oral skills and to learn about life in a very different context.
Soliya’s Connect Programme – GEL students in our centres in the Middle East are connected with university students from the USA and MENA region to discuss global issues and develop critical thinking skills.
Internationally recognised assessment
JWL is registered as a Cambridge Test Centre. Students sit the online Cambridge English Placement test at the start, to assess their CEFR level and allow them to be placed in the appropriate class.
At the end of the GEL programme, having completed a minimum of three levels, students sit the Cambridge Linguaskill test. This is an online, adaptive, multi-level and on demand test lasting 60-85 minutes. Candidates are issued with a Cambridge test report and JWL GEL certificate at the end.
Global facilitator training
Teaching English to speakers of other languages is a professional discipline and JWL is committed to providing effective facilitators who adhere to our vision. GEL facilitators are generally recruited from within the local community and JWL offers professional development opportunities to help them gain the skills they need:
Creighton Teacher Training course: 150 hours of instruction over 7 months by Creighton University’s Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) in the United States (Omaha, Nebraska)
GEL Buddy Initiative: GEL facilitators are paired with an English-speaking teacher-mentor to work collaboratively over 4 months on a project related to English teaching.
GEL Booster course: This online GEL course facilitated by English teaching experts from Loyola Idiomas (Spain) allows GEL facilitators to brush up on their own language skills.
Global Facilitator Training sessions – GEL facilitators are regularly invited to participate in global facilitator training sessions on an online platform, delivered by teaching experts from across the globe.

The Online Mathematics Bridging Course (OMB+) serves as a refresher/preparatory course for those interested in pursuing tertiary studies in fields such as engineering, economics, science or computer science.
The OMB+ programme is divided into 11 chapters/topics and additional modules, each of which consist of four components:
Expository texts with built-in videos, explanations, examples, and quick check of understanding
Exercises
Training
Quizzes
Each chapter or additional module has a final exam.
Time frame: 6 months

ISCED level 5 programmes typically equip learners with professional knowledge, skills and competencies, often practical and occupation-specific, to prepare learners to enter the labour market. They may also pave pathways to other tertiary education programmes. Academic tertiary education programmes that are below Bachelor’s level or equivalent are classified under ISCED level 5.

ISCED level 7 programmes typically equip learners with advanced academic and/or professional knowledge, skills and competencies which lead to a second degree or equivalent qualification. Although generally theory-based, they may include significant research components and draw on the latest research and professional good practice. These programmes are traditionally offered by universities and equivalent tertiary educational institutions.

Globalization changes our lives...
We increasingly communicate, work and live together with people from various cultures. Conflicts arise when different values and moral concepts clash. “How-to”-recipes and ready-made solutions for ethical problems quickly reach their limits.
The Graduate Certificate Programme “Ethics of Intercultural Dialogue” (EID) enables you to tackle difficult ethical questions in your workplaces and life-worlds while looking through an intercultural lens. It creates a vibrant as well as robust culture of encounter by taking a philosophical stance. Here, political theories, interreligious dialogue, (inter)cultural philosophy as well as historical implications play a major role.
The programme combines critical reflection with concrete experiences and current disruptive developments, e.g. ethical concerns in pandemic times, normative implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI), journalism in times of war, climate crisis, human rights and business ethics. It instills practical knowledge as well as theoretical depth in participants to meaningfully orient and maneuver in a complex world.
Within 1.5 years students deepen their knowledge about fundamental ethical questions:
How do we engage with ethical principles different from ours?
What kind of ethical and political concepts are sound in a globalizing and yet unequal world?
How can we orient ourselves and others towards creating a sustainable culture of encounter?
How can you come to sound moral decisions in complex times?
ISCED level 8 programmes represent the highest level of formal education and mainly lead to an advanced research qualification. They focus on advanced study, original research, and are usually only offered by research-oriented tertiary educational institutions such as universities.
JWL’s Doctoral Collegium offers a collaborative and supportive space for doctoral candidates—both team members and students—whose research focuses on the theory and practice of higher education at the margins. Through mentorship, peer exchange, and shared reflection, the Collegium fosters rigorous scholarship while staying rooted in the lived realities of marginalized communities. It aims to develop research that is not only academically robust but also responsive to the challenges and opportunities of providing quality higher education in underserved contexts.
